Samsung M8910 Pixon12

Samsung officially launched the M8910 Pixon12, the company's first 12 megapixel cameraphone with a full touchscreen. The Pixon12's camera includes a large number of high-end features, including a smart-auto mode that automatically detects the proper scene mode to use based on the subject. The Pixon12's 28mm wide-angle lens and Xenon flash should make it easy to get high-quality indoor shots, too. Samsung also knows that life doesn't tend to sit still for long, and as such it has included a touch based focus system that actually tracks the subject as it moves about the frame to make sure that energetic pet or child stays in focus.

Samsung claims that the camera on the Pixon12, which has a dedicated shutter key, offers a quick startup time and fast saves that should offer about a 2 second shot to shot time. The photo viewer in the Pixon12 is supposed to be quite speedy, as well, and once photos are tagged and rated to your heart's content, they can be easily uploaded to Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket, or Friendster. The phone can also record 720x480 pixel resolution video at 30 frames per second, and supports a wide variety of audio and video formats, including H.264, DivX, and XviD.

Of course there's more to the Samsung M8910 Pixon12 than just the camera. The Pixon12 sports a 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen display that boasts a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and the phone also features both WiFi and HSPA 3G data for blazing photo uploads and internet tasks. Bluetooth 2.1 is also on board for wireless headsets, and the Pixon12 can be connected to a PC through its standard micro-USB port. Other features like a built-in GPS module and an FM radio help fill out the Pixon12's impressive spec sheet.

Samsung claims that the M8910 Pixon12 is the first 12 megapixel, full-touch cameraphone. While the Sony Ericsson Satio (Idou) was certainly introduced first, it seems very likely that Samsung will, at least, be first to market. The company says that it expects the M8910 Pixon12 to be on shelves in Europe by the end of this month, and that shipments will expand to other markets in July 2009. [view detailed spec.]

Samsung i637 Jack

The Samsung i637 Jack runs on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard OS but will be upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5, when the latter becomes available.

The Jack upgrades the functionality of the Samsung i617 BlackJack II with Wi-Fi, more RAM (256MB), a faster CPU (528MHz) as well as a 3.5mm standard audio jack. The Samsung Jack also has a 3 megapixel shooter, instead of the 2 megapixel one on the BlackJack II.

The rest of the functionality has remained pretty much the same, but frankly said it hardly needs further upgrading anyway. GPS is onboard, along with AT&T Navigator, and so are Bluetooth v2.0 and USB. The full QWERTY keyboard almost goes without saying.

The Samsung i637 Jack sport quad-band GSM connectivity and tri-band UMTS (with HSDPA), which makes it capable of worldwide roaming. The display of the Jack will be 2.4" wide, coming with QVGA resolution. [view detailed spec.]

Samsung i550w

Fascinating as they are, ultra high-end handsets are not everybody's cup of tea. In fact, the good old mid-range is the bread and butter for every successful mobile phone company, for that's what gets those sales numbers right. As we see it, Samsung i550 might just be the phone to perfectly fit this description. It doesn't yell expensive out loud, but has great all-round functionality and might just become tomorrow's classic.

When first announced, the Samsung i550 had only one version and it crucially lacked Wi-Fi. However, just as it started hitting the shelves, a second WLAN enabled version named Samsung i550w popped up. The two versions have no other differences in terms of hardware or software. Anyway, the second version places Samsung i550 in a somewhat different league - handsets that have it (almost) all. It may not have the best camera or GPS receiver around but performs adequately in both departments and that is what really matters most of the time.

Right now the Samsung i550 seems to have no direct market rivals. It's considerably cheaper than Nokia N82 and N95, or Samsung G810, which makes any comparison unfair. Even the N95 classic costs more than what you would pay for a Samsung i550. All of these handsets have a number of extra features on top of what the i550 has to offer but, as we found out, they're all on par in terms of usability and user friendliness. [view detailed spec.]
